Football academy launched in Wisbech
Teenagers will be able to work towards a football career and gain vital qualifications at the same time, thanks to a new academy.
Wisbech’s Thomas Clarkson Academy and Pitchside Football Academy will be working together to help teenagers follow their sporting dreams.
The two organisations will be launching a Post 16 Football Academy in September – and trials will be held shortly.
The academy will initially be on offer to boys aged between 16 to 18-years-old.
TCA Principal Clare Claxton is delighted to be forming the partnership.
She said: “We are really thrilled to be working with Pitchside Football Academy Ltd to open a football academy at Thomas Clarkson Academy.
“These type of academies have proved to be successful ventures and cater for young people who are keen on sport and want to pursue their passion.
“At the same time they can gain qualifications to enhance their career opportunities.”
Teenagers will be able to study for A-Levels or a BTEC Diploma, while also playing football on a daily basis.
Pitchside staff will provide the coaching and preparations for league match days, which have been scheduled for Wednesday afternoons.
Teachers at Thomas Clarkson will be responsible for the education package and pupils will be official members of the sixth form.
Steve Walker, from Pitchside Football Academy Ltd, said this was an important opportunity for youngsters wishing to pursue a sporting career.
He said: “The academy offers local talented young footballers the chance to train as a full-time footballer.
“They will receive expert coaching from our staff and also enjoy the other opportunities on offer to TCA Sixth Form students.”
Youngsters hoping to gain a place will need to pass a trial and provide the school with predicted GCSE grades.
Trial dates are:
n Wednesday, May 27, from noon until 2pm
n Sunday, June 1, between 10am and 2pm
n Sunday, June 8, between 10am and 2pm.
