A ground breaking volunteer project in Wisbech is urging youngsters to bank on their talent and cash-in on a new design competition.
Young people in the town are invited to enter a contest to design a new time credit currency, which volunteers will earn for giving their time to help the local community and which they can spend on activities and events.
It’s all part of the innovative Cambridgeshire Time Credit scheme, which is being rolled out across the county.
People using the scheme can help their community by giving their time to projects and organisations and, as a thank you, receive time credits.
These can be used to access events, training and leisure services or to trade time with neighbours.
The programme is being run by Spice, a social enterprise company specialising in time credits and is funded by Cambridgeshire County Council and CHS Group.
The competition launched last Monday and the deadline for submissions is next Friday, September 19.
Entry forms can be picked up from Wisbech Library in Ely Place, Community House in Southwell Road or the Spinney Adventure Playground in Waterlees Road.
A panel of judges will announce the winner on Tuesday, September 23.
The Time Credit scheme will be rolled out across Wisbech later this year after a successful pilot at The Spinney, Wisbech Children’s Centre, The Ferry Project and The Orchards School last year.
Wendy Lansdown, community engagement programme manager at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “We’re very excited to be working with Spice and local people to make the Time Credits scheme happen.
“This competition is the first step in helping bring the programme alive for people living in Wisbech.
“We really want to tap into young people’s creativity and find a design that’s representative of Wisbech.”
The winner of the competition will have their design used on the time credits.
The new credit note will be printed live at the Velo Festival, a Tour de France celebration event which is being held from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday, September 27, at the Spinney Adventure Playground.
