Here's the fortnightly Active Fenland column by Fenland District Council physical activity co-ordinator Hettie West.

Food Waste Action Week is a great opportunity to get to know more about food waste.

Love Food Hate Waste have set up a yearly campaign week called Food Waste Action Week.

This year, it runs from March 7-13. The aim of the campaign is to educate one and all about how healthy eating can save you money and reduce food waste. Let’s use it, not lose it and save up to £730 a year for the average family.

Love Food Hate Waste have endless facts and healthy recipes that really make the impact of food waste hit home, which can all be found on their website (www.lovefoodhatewaste.com).

To summarise:

  • Turning down your fridge to 1-5oc can help your food last longer;
  • Store root vegetables in the dark and they keep longer;
  • How to plan your food week and make healthy choices.

If every household reduced their waste of bread for a year, the equivalent positive impact on the environment would be as if 5.3 million trees were planted.

Our friends at Love Food Hate Waste tell us that, compared to 2007, the UK is already saving £3.3billion per year so we are on the right tracks, but now is the time to really make change.

Here at Active Fenland, in aid of Food Waste Action Week 2022, we have put together a social media campaign aimed at raising awareness, not only of the impact of food waste, but of how you can help, and how you can lead a lifestyle involving less food waste – whilst eating a healthy diet and on a budget too.
