Home help and event steward opportunities

THE London Olympics has raised a new interest in volunteering at all kinds of events.

With this in mind Volunteer Centre Fenland is offering volunteers of 19 and over, free places on a Stewarding at Events course. Delivered in conjunction with CP Learning Trust, this is a 40-hour, level 2 portfolio-based qualification, running over a week.

The course includes preparing for spectator events, controlling movement of spectators, monitoring crowds, safety and responding to emergencies.

There are two courses: April 23 to 27 at the Rosmini Centre, Wisbech, and June 11 to 15 in Chatteris.

Places are limited, so contact the centre quickly to apply.

• Volunteers are urgently needed by Care Network to offer practical, non medical help to adults in Cambridgeshire and the adjoining areas.

Care Network’s Help at Home co-ordinators assess primarily short-term need to help cover return from hospital or an illness at home.

They arrange the type of help and times to suit both the volunteer and the person requesting it.

Volunteers don’t have to make a regular time commitment and can fit volunteering around the demands of their own lives.

All staff and volunteers are fully trained by Care Network, are CRB checked and carry an ID badge.

Roles include drivers for community car schemes, administrative support for car schemes, and good neighbour volunteers.

Volunteers may offer occasional help with a range of tasks from taking curtains down for a wash, walking the dog, changing light bulbs, pushing a wheelchair-user for a walk, helping fill in forms, reading the newspaper or letters, small sewing tasks, or to just having a cup of tea and a chat.

All of these tasks are agreed with you, in advance, through Care Network’s co-ordinator.

If you can volunteer to help make a difference, contact the centre on 01945-582192.
