A Downham man is hoping to start up a new kayak and canoe club in Hilgay.

Andrew Ball, 39, says the nearest club is in Fakenham and is hoping to set up regular meetings with coaching sessions along the River Wissey.

He is now putting out an appeal for members and canoe coaches to get in touch to help form the group.

Mr Ball said: “I am looking for coaches and a few members that want to have a paddle along the River Wissey.

“This is something I really enjoy and I would like to do something for the community.

“The nearest club is in Fakenham or there is another which is even further away.”

Initially, members would have to have their own canoes but in the future Mr Ball hopes to have club boats.

He says that Hilgay is the ideal location to form a club, which will be using the British Canoe Union.

Mr Ball said: “The Wissey is one of the safest rivers.

“It is not that deep and is perfect for teaching.”

He has recently taken up canoeing again after a break.

Mr Ball said: “I started kayaking as a teenager but have been kayaking again for more than a year.

“I bought myself a boat and off I went.

“I love it and I have missed it.”
