OVER 100 people attended a reunion of students and staff who have attended Wisbech’s Horticultural College since it opened over 50 years ago.
The first intake of students was in 1956/57 and one of the very first, David Hutchinson, was among those who attended Saturday’s get together at Elme Hall Hotel.
The hortic station, in Newcommon Bridge, closes this summer as it is part of college facilities being transferred so the reunion turned out to be a one off event.
One of the organisers, Richard Walpole, a former head of the hortic station, said the reunion wasn’t organised with that in mind as work on arranging the event started over a year ago.
A working group of Mr Walpole, his wife Jayne, Linda and Tim Jellis, Teresa Wicklen, Fred Shorten, Ann Purt and Dick Sanders organised the event.
Mr Walpole said it went very well with people travelling from near and far, including from abroad.
Some past principals also attended including Ioan Morgan and John Whittington.
There were photographs on display of past events for students and staff to reminisce and a book written by Mr Walpole about the hortic station. Some of the pictures went back to the early 1960s.
Mr Walpole said the fact that the base closes this summer made the reunion more poignant.
