How many people are furloughed in Fenland? Government figures released
More than 10,000 people in the district are currently signed up to the government's furlough scheme, new figures reveal.
Statistics released by HM Revenue and Customs show there are 10,400 people in Fenland who are receiving 80 per cent of their full pay from the taxpayer while carrying out no work for their employer.
The furlough scheme - officially known as the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme - was introduced by chancellor Rishi Sunak in response to businesses having to close their doors or finding they had reduced opportunities to trade. In total, 6,445,800 workers are on the scheme.
