Vandals have damaged an outdoor table tennis table within weeks of it being installed in Wisbech.

Fenland District Council has installed six tables in Wisbech, March and Whittlesey over the last month using money from the £250,000 Sport England grant, which was awarded earlier this year.

But a corner of one of the two tables in Wisbech Park has been cracked following an incident last week.

A council spokesman said: “What can you say? These tables are pretty sturdy, so it takes a lot to do this amount of damage. In the short time they have been in place they have already proved very popular, so it’s very disheartening when a few idiots behave in a way that spoils the enjoyment for everyone else.

“We urge anyone who sees anything like this happening to contact the police immediately so we can try to catch those responsible.”

Tables have also been installed in West End Park, March, and Manor Centre, Whittlesey with bats and balls being borrowed for free from the leisure centres.

Cllr Michelle Tansfield, cabinet member for sport and leisure, had a go at the outdoor table in March with Chad Bassett, who pays for the Trojans in the Wisbech Table Tennis league.

He said: “I’m used to playing indoors and this is a definitely a whole different ball game.

“But it’s a fun way of getting people interested in table tennis who’ve never played it before.”
