Dressage rider Emma Openshaw, from Marshland St James, put up an impressive performance at an eastern counties championship event.

Riding her home-trained dark brown gelding Welt Star, she finished fifth in her category in a hotly-contested class at the British Dressage regional championships at Keysoe, in Bedfordshire.

There were nearly 30 entries in the class with a handful of marks splitting the first five and Emma’s score was within two per cent of the winner.

Emma, who runs a training yard at Wings Farm, had been national champion at this level in the past when she rode for another owner but her latest result was extra special because she was competing on her own horse.

Welt Star finished in the top ten at the eastern regionals at novice level last year and had moved up two grades to compete at medium level this time.

Emma said: “My target was to finish in the top five and I am so proud of my horse for achieving it.”

Another Fenland rider competing at the championship was Nicola Jennings, from Wisbech, riding Bodelicious, who finished in the top ten at advanced medium level.
