A DODDINGTON lollipop lady got the shock of her life when a group of parents and children sprung a 70th birthday surprise on her.

Iris Lilley, who turned 70 on Monday, had no clue what awaited her as she went to her post outside Lionel Walden School and was astounded to see a decorated pole, banner and balloons.

She was also given a basket of gifts, including handmade chocolates, brandy, wine and a special handpainted glass, and a card signed by everyone who put some money towards the gifts.

“I was absolutely shocked,” Iris said. “It came as a great surprise, but it was beautiful.”

Iris has been a lollipop lady for the past 12-and-a-half years and has seen many youngsters come and go.

Parent Tara Fiveash, whose two children attend Lionel Walden, organised the special surprise for the much-loved lollipop lady.

Tara said: “She’s very good. She rarely has a day off and is there in rain, snow, wind, all weather.”
