Police are hunting an heartless intruder who pretended to be a Good Samaritan before robbing an elderly widow of priceless jewellery including her wedding ring.

Freda Garford, 89, was settling down for a night in front of the TV when a man walked into her living room.

He told the pensioner “I think you’ve been broken into my love, check your handbag.”

When widow Freda, who lives alone, searched her purse she realised her cash was gone.

On his exit out of the house, the man showed the elderly lady the window which the robber entered through and said “I’ll go and find them”, before making off into the dark.

Not only had her cash been stolen but the callous thief had gone through numerous cupboards, bags and boxes at her home in Wisbech, Cambs.

A number of family heirlooms were nabbed including Freda’s mother’s ring which was a 200-year-old platinum diamond ring.

The retired factory worker’s engagement ring and wedding ring were also taken along with a number of necklaces.

Granddaughter Debbie Nobbs, 39, said her nan hasn’t returned home since the raid on Tuesday night and Freda broke down after the realisation kicked in.

Debbie, who works at her sister’s hair salon, said: “My nan is very independent and not a woman of many words but you can tell she’s very pale.

“I think it’s the shock at the moment - when you go back and see what is missing, its heartbreaking but I’m just glad she wasn’t hurt.

“A burglary of any kind is wrong but when she’s sitting in her house watching TV and defenceless - it’s awful.

“I’m very angry and I’d like to find out who has done this.”

Freda is now staying at her daughter’s house, Sue Ogden, and is unsure if and when she will return home.

The man is described as being white, 5ft 6, medium build, aged 21-40 with an English accent. He was wearing a dark blue zip jacket, a scarf over his face and a hat.

A police spokesman said: “This was a particularly frightening experience for the elderly victim and we would urge anyone who was in the area at the time who may have seen something to come forward.”
