Join in and celebrate the Fens this weekend June 17 to 19
The third ‘Celebrate the Fens’ event is this weekend, and it promises to be bigger and better than previous years, with plenty of opportunity for people to get involved and celebrate.
The event is organised by ‘Fascinating Fens’ with the aim to showcase the Fenland area over a weekend during the summer, and this year there is an excellent programme of events for the public to enjoy.
A spokesperson for Fascinating Fens said “We want to thank everyone who has come forward and offered to be part of our programme which has plenty of variety across the Fenland area. We also want to make it an interactive event so over the weekend, people can get involved on social media by sending images and anything else fen related by using the #CelebrateTheFens."
The weekend activities include an open day at Crowland Abbey. Whilst there is an open for nature event with the New Life Old West project. You can also enjoy walking tours at places such as Chatteris Little Acre Pocket Park, Kings Lynn River and Shakespeare Guildhall Theatre, Great Fen nature walk, as well as the Fen Edge Trail at Haddenham.
Other activities include Fen Bush craft with the CP Learning trust, a chance to paint Ely with the Ely Arts Festival, a Fenland family history open day at Wisbech community hub, an exhibition of Cowbit Wash at Spalding Gentlemen’s Society, and much more.
There are also virtual activities such as competitions, tours and links to self-guided walks. Local schools, libraries and ommunity groups are also getting involved.
The weekend will open with the ‘Fen Folks Friday’ online event on Friday evening where a number of speakers will showcase the Fenland area.
The weekend will also feature the official book launch of ‘Secret Fens’ with the author, Karen Merrison presenting an illustrated talk, book signing and meet and greet session on Saturday.
Karen was born in Wisbech and still lives in the Fens and her book explores some of the hidden aspects of the area.
