Following a recent Office of Fair Trading (OFT) report and Parliamentary debate expressing
concern about the unregulated lettings market, local agent William H Brown in Wisbech
is urging landlords and tenants to make sure they are using a letting agent they can trust.
According to William H Brown, there are a number of key questions customers should be
asking their lettings agent, from what organisations and industry bodies it is affiliated to, to what internal processes and regulations they have in place to ensure they are delivering a
first rate service.
“Whether you are a landlord with a property to let, or someone looking for a place to rent,
it is vital that you are using a recognised letting agent with the right level of experience,
proven credentials and affiliation with recognised industry bodies,” says Vickie Jones,
Lettings Manager for William H Brown.
“We are members of The Association of Residential Lettings Agents (ARLA), the Tenancy Deposit Scheme and The Property Ombudsman so our customers can rest assured that they are dealing with an agent which is externally regulated and adheres to the strict codes of practice that these bodies require from its members.”
That said, the lettings team at William H Brown also believes agents need to be self regulating and perform above and beyond what is considered industry best practice to be considered the trustworthy agent of choice.
“We believe landlords should be looking for agents that are self-regulating with a proven
track record,” says Vickie. “Landlords and investors need to think about their agent’s
potential in terms of marketing their rental properties effectively. For example, William H
Brown is part of Sequence, a national network of lettings agents with offices from the South
Coast all the way up to Scotland meaning we have a national database of potential tenants
which smaller outfits are unable to provide.”
