March man killed in Hartford crash

A March man died following a crash between two lorries on the A141 at Hartford yesterday (Tuesday, March 10).

Phil Asplin, 59, of Cedar Close, suffered fatal injuries after the lorry he was driving collided with another HGV and instantly caught fire just after 2.30pm.

The second lorry caught fire a short while after, however the driver, a 23-year-old man from Hornchurch, Greater London, managed to escape although suffered serious but not life threatening injuries.

The fire caused serious damage to the road and extensive work will be carried out over the next 24 hours to repair the surface. Diversions have been put in place while the work is completed.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either of the vehicles leading up to the moments before the incident.
