March primary schools will merge

Two March schools will be merging in the autumn.

Cambridgeshire County Council has agreed to go ahead with proposals to amalgamate Westwood Junior School and Maple Grove Primary School.

Westwood Primary School, which will operate over the two existing sites, will open in September.

The county council has held consultations with parents since the move was announced in January.

A final decision was made on April 16.

The move to combine the schools was agreed after Maple Grove was placed in special measures after being rated as inadequate in an Ofsted inspection.

All existing children at the schools will transfer to the newly created primary school.

Westwood Primary School will continue to provide 90 places per year group from Year 1 to Year 6 but will offer additional Reception places in September 2015.

From September 2016 onwards, it will admit 120 pupils into its Reception Year as the school is expanded to cope with anticipated demand.

The new primary school will initially cater for 630 pupils when it opens in September, but this is expected to increase to 840.

Proposals to expand the infant school are not affected.
