A Leverington woman celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday with three generations of her family.
Mary Ann Missin was born in Wisbech, one of 14 children. She has survived all her siblings, with the exception of her youngest sister Brenda.
Mary had a tough start to life, helping her mother run the household and look after her brothers and sisters. She left school at 14 and started work at Burton Chip Factory the following Monday.
She married Cyril Missin at Walsoken church and they lived on Sutton Road before moving to Roman Bank at Leverington. They lived initially in a beach hut and extended and improved the house to create a four-bedroom double fronted property.
Cyril ran a lorry and bus business that was later renamed ‘Waratah Coaches’ when they relocated to Gorefield Road. He died in 1985.
The couple had three children and Mary now has three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who visit often.
She has always been involved with the church and joined Leverington Friendship Club in her later years. She enjoyed meeting people at the club and going on trips.
