March Mayor’s Mini idea to boost town’s visitors

A mayor is leading the way in a new initiative to try to attract more people into his town’s centre.

Councillor Gary Christy, who was sworn in as Mayor of March in May, has organised a special event aimed at bringing more visitors to the town.

The ‘Mayor’s Minis in Market Place’ event is set to take place on Sunday, August 18 from 10am to 3pm and will see 25 of the iconic cars on display.

It will not only hopefully attract people into the town centre, which is undergoing a major-multi-million pound revamp, but will also celebrate the 65th anniversary of the classic car.

Cllr Christy, who owns a Mini himself, said the event was hopefully one of a number that will be held in the town to support businesses by bringing more people in.

He said there are other ideas in the pipeline and is appealing for anyone with any suggestions to get in touch via the newly created The Mayor of March Facebook page.

The Exchange on the Market Place will be open on the day offering customers Mini-theme food, like Mini sausage rolls, burgers and ice creams.

Gary said: “One of the things that has been raised with me since I became mayor by local traders is how can we attract people to the town centre, and one idea was to hold an event in the Market Place.

“Working with the Cambs Mini Club (and being Mini owners ourselves), permission has been given the go-ahead by Fenland District Council to hold a ‘Mayor’s Minis in March Market Place’ event – hopefully it will attract a lot of people to the town and prove a fun day.

The event is free to attend.
