MARCH has a new Mayor from today (Wednesday) in the shape of Bernard Keane.
Cllr Keane was unanimously voted into office at Monday’s meeting of March Town Council, but election rules meant he could not formally take over from out-going Mayor Andrew Pugh until today.
Likewise newly elected councillors: Mike Shermer, Tamsin Nicholls, Gavin Philpott and Robert Skoulding, were allowed to debate issues at the meeting but not to vote under the same rules.
It is the third time Cllr Keane, who was proposed by Cllr Kit Owen, has been the town’s Mayor. He held the post in 2002/3 and 2003/4.
Jan French, who was proposed by Cllr Keane, was unanimously elected as deputy Mayor. She has been Mayor three times in the past in 1992/3, 2006/7 and 2007/8.
Both promised to do their best to promote March over the coming year, with Cllr Keane adding how delighted he was to be chosen.
They also said how sad they were that Deputy Mayor Andrew Donnelly, who was in line to take over the chain of office, had not been able to enjoy the honour because he lost his seat Thursday’s election.
