Meeting could see thousands awarded for Fenland highway plans as part of Cambridgeshire County Council Local Highway Improvement Programme

Towns across Fenland could be awarded thousands for highway improvements if applications for community-driven schemes are approved.

Nine bids for funding are being recommended for approval by county councillors in this year’s round of the Local Highway Improvement Programme at the Highways and Transport Committee on Tuesday, October 1.

Covering all districts in Cambridgeshire, the scheme allows parish or town councils to apply for up to £25,000 per project and gives residents the chance to propose ideas for their areas.

The meeting could see the following given the go-ahead:

- Leverington Village Hall - Dropped kerb for use by people with reduced mobility.

- Norwood Avenue, March - Three sets of speed cushions along the length of the road.

- Friday Bridge Road, Elm - Priority Chicane and Mobile Vehicle Activated Signs.

- Upwell Road/Sixteen Foot Bank junction, Christchurch - New road markings.

- Kirkgate, Tydd St Giles - More street lighting.

- Fenland Way, Chatteris - Warning for motorists of pedestrians or cyclists crossing over.

- Doddington Road, Wimblington - Parking restrictions and no stopping order.

- March Town Centre - Parking restrictions like double yellow lines or controlled parking zone.

- Victoria Road, Wisbech - Speed reduction.

Cllr Alex Beckett, chair of the Highways and Transport Committee at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “Local Highways Improvements are a tool for communities to invest in the issues that are often of great local concern.

“Unfortunately, every year we receive more applications than we have funding for, despite increasing the amount of budget available, so we rely on officers and a cross-party group of members to review and score the applications.

“I look forward to discussing these schemes at committee and if approved, delivering them for our communities across the county to make better, safer and more sustainable journeys.”
