Memory café at Wisbech care home will be open to the community offering support to those with dementia
A Wisbech care home is launching a new initiative to help sufferers of dementia and their partners/carers.
Rose Lodge in Walton Road Wisbech is set to host a monthly memory café led by the home's activities co-ordinator Jane Ritchie. The first of these will be on March 10 from 10am to noon.
Moving forward the event will be held every second Tuesday in the month and all will include refreshments and activities for those attending to enjoy including jigsaw puzzles, painting and other crafts.
Jane said: "As far as I'm aware there is no longer a memory café in Wisbech, so I thought it would be nice to start one here, as we have clients with dementia on our Memory Lane unit.
"The idea is to offer support to people with dementia and their partners. I'm hoping to have regular speakers on useful topics and I don't want it to be just a place to come for a coffee, so I'm planning on having lots of different craft activities for people to enjoy together, while they have a chat.
"I did much of my training on Memory Lane, so I have a good understanding of dementia so I will be able to answer questions and offer advice, but I will also be able to provide books and leaflets with information.
"Living with dementia or living with someone who has the illness can be very isolating, hopefully the café will offer an opportunity for people to get out and socialise with others who are in the same situation and understand what it's like."
The memory café is free and is open to everyone in the community as well as those who have family members at Rose Lodge.
