A dilapidated village hall is going to be replaced with a £222,000 new community centre.

People in Welney have been working for many years to replace their outdated wooden pavilion on the village playing field off Herne Drove.

Planning permission has been granted for a new specially-designed single storey building on the playing field.

Welney Parish Council has now raised the £222,000 needed to replace the building.

The project has received £127,000 from the Marshals Charity in Welney, £38,000 from WREN’s FCC Communities Fund and £43,000 from Sport England Inspired Facilities Fund.

A council spokesman said: “The parish council would like to thank the awarding bodies for their generous support, which will make a huge difference to our community.

“We would also like to thank the customers of Waitrose in Ely who generously supported our project with over £200 from their charities of the month.”

Downham company MRC Modular will be installing the building.

The hall will be used for cricket, yoga, carpet bowls and dog training.
