Generous March residents have rallied to help fund the upkeep of the town’s Estover Playing Field over the summer months following last week’s appeal in this newspaper.
Sue Clenshaw, secretary of the Estover Playing Field Association, issued an urgent SOS for money to ensure the field can be maintained through the summer months.
Among the first to offer cash was businessman John Skoulding of Snowmountain Enterprises Ltd. He handed over a cheque for £1,000 to Sue at his business premises in Station Road on Thursday.
John explained: “The field is a great asset to the town and it needs preserving. I used to go down their looking for a game of football when I was a boy.”
Sue, who was over-the-moon at John’s generous gesture, said his contribution would go along way to keeping the field going. She said other donations from individuals have also come in.
“It is hard asking people for money but we need donations if are going to keep the field in a useable state. What we really need is a long-term lease from the county council so we can start applying for grants, “ said Sue, who is currently organising a fundraising stall for the upcoming St George’s Day Fayre.
