Former Wisbech Catholic priest Father John was buried last week in the grounds of Ratcliffe College, Leicestershire, following a moving ceremony in the college chapel.

Among the 160 attendees were about 60 parishioners from the Fens. A large number of them travelled by coach and were accompanied by Fr Les Slack, parish priest of St Jude’s in Whittlesey.

The ceremony was also attended by about 25 members of John’s family who travelled up from London.

John, who was born in Amritsar, India, in 1946 to a Sikh family, then moved to Tanzania. It was there he encountered some Irish priests and expressed his desire, first to become a Christian and then a Catholic priest.

The service paid tribute to John’s Sikh roots and his nephew gave one of the readings.

Fr Jim Flynn, the recently retired head of the world wide Rosminian Order and a close friend, stated John was happiest when he came to Wisbech and had his own parish to manage, a sentiment endorsed by the large Wisbech turn-out.

The Rosminian Fathers hope to come to Wisbech in the near future to hold a memorial service for John.
