A NEW charity supporting people over the age of 65 is launching in Fenland.
Set up by a group of like-minded people who have all worked in the care and charity sectors, ‘Age is Just a Number’ seeks to increase the confidence and wellbeing of older people, helping them to live a more enriched life.
Age is Just a Number will provide time limited, specific therapeutic groups and/or one-to-one counselling, facilitated by trained therapists and professionals. For those people that require a high support level, they will offer one-to-one counselling sessions with specialist counsellors.
The charity is targeting five groups: men’s groups, those who have experienced the loss of a life partner, living alone and dealing with isolation – a huge issue in Fenland given its rural nature, and carers and individuals who are having to deal with and cope with difficult life choices and decisions.
Age is Just a Number is not focused on one particular illness or condition, such as cancer or Alzheimer’s, but seeks to help anybody over 65 who needs extra support.
This could be signposting to other organisations who can provide specific help or providing emotional support.
Themed closed peer support groups have been set up for individuals who are experiencing a similar event in their lives.
The charity’s BACP-registered counsellor provides a safe environment where the needs of an individual are identified and worked through. Once the course is complete, support and encouragement will be given for the groups to continue to meet and be self-supporting.
As the charity is just starting out, it is seeking funding to help develop its work.
Raising £1,000 will enable four older people the opportunity to undertake a course of one-to-one counselling or 10 people to attend a bereavement group.
To help with the fundraising effort, a large yard sale is being held on Sunday from 9am to 4pm at Tamar Computers, Redmoor Lane, Wisbech. Parking and refreshments will be available at the Orchard Tea Room opposite.
