An estimated 40 new jobs could be created if plans to open a gym at the new Tesco site in Wisbech gets the green light.

The supermarket giant has applied to Fenland District Council to use part of its new store in Cromwell Road for a gym, which would be open 24 hours a day.

More than 40 weekly classes along with personal training and a gym would be provided by 24/7 Fitness if the change of use application is approved.

The design and access statement says: “Our research has noted that Wisbech lacks health and fitness centres.

“The proposed development therefore presents an excellent opportunity to encourage all members of the community to become more active and healthy, in a pleasant environment. For these reasons the proposed development would help tackle obesity and encourage exercise.”

If the proposal goes ahead, the gym could create 20 full time and a further 20 part time jobs.

The gym would be located on the first floor and includes reception area, staff offices, storage and beauty rooms.

Plans include to create a main gym area with weights and cardio vascular equipment along with a fitness studio, ladies only gym, spinning room and changing areas.

The application states: “In addition to providing facilities for individual gym workouts, the proposed gym would offer over 40 classes including for the following activities: AB Blaster, Body Combat, Body Pump, Circuits, Kickboxing, Legs, Bums and Tums, Pilates, Rid, Spinning, Step and Tone, Yoga, Zumba.

“Such classes, which would be open to all, would take place each day between the hours of 9.30am and 9pm.

“The gym would also offer personal trainers for one to one sessions, as well as providing fitness programmes to help customers meet their objectives.”
