New lease agreed on Chapel Road car park in Wisbech but the fair must find a new home

A car park which looked lost to a town has been secured for the future following lengthy negotiations.

There was a question mark over Chapel Road car park in Wisbech continuing to be available to drivers.

At Monday night’s Wisbech Town Council meeting Cllr Sam Hoy, council leader, gave an update to members as a district councillor.

She explained the Chapel Road lease was due for renewal with its owners the National Trust.

However, she said the National Trust at one point was looking reluctant to renew it and it looked as if the town would lose the car park.

But she said Fenland officers had continued negotiations with the National Trust and an agreement has now been reached.

“Thankfully Chapel Road car park is going nowhere and will be available for people to use,” said Cllr Hoy.

However, one of the conditions of the new lease is that the fair will no longer be allowed to use it when it comes to town.

Cllr Hoy said we need to decide a new location for it and we will be asking people their opinions on where they think it would be best put.

She said: “There are a number of options including the town park, but we will ask people where they think it should go before making a decision.”
