New parking spaces for March car park almost complete

A town is set to have 10 extra parking spaces later this month.

March Town Councillors heard at their meeting on Monday that work is currently underway to create the new spaces at the City Road car park.

The spaces are being created in the area of the car park where the former toilets stood.

The work is almost complete and drivers should be able to make use of the spaces from next week.

However, shoppers will have to wait a little longer before they will be able to use new toilets that are set to be built on land off Broad Street.

Fenland District Council is looking to replace the Broad Street toilets that were demolished as part of the Future High Streets programme of works that have transformed the main road through the town.

In an update to councillors Cllr Jan French, who serves as a district and county councillor, told members that there was a delay in the work starting on the toilets due to Middle Level Commissioners asking a number of questions about the proposals, which will see the toilets located on the riverside with the junction with Grays Lane.

Cllr French said: “The information they are asking is totally irrelevant, but it has caused a delay.”

But she said it was hoped the work would begin in the next few weeks, with the new loos ready for use by the end of May.

In the meantime she said Fenland District Council was working on a lease to handover the former chapel in Station Road cemetery to the town council.
