Demolition work started this week on the old pavilion at Welney playing field to make way for the village’s new community building.

Demolition contractor Matthew Lawrence will be clearing the way for the new building currently being put together at the premises of MRC in Barroway Drove.

Demolition is expected to take around one week and will enable foundation pads to be constructed on which the new modular community centre will be placed.

It is the first phase of a £220,000 project to provide the village with a new community centre.

It has been made possible by funding from WREN, Sport England and Marshall’s Charity, as well as funding events and donations in and around the village over the last few years. Sport England Inspired Facilities Fund provided £43,441, Marshall’s Charity kindly donated £127,000, and the project was awarded £36,865 from WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund.

The electricity to the old building was disconnected on Friday to allow demolition work to begin and it is hoped work can start on the new building by the end of February. Welney parish councillors hope to be viewing the nearly completed modular building in the next two weeks at the site of MRC before it is then taken apart into its modular sections and transported to Welney playing field, where the completed modules will be re-assembled and the final works completed.
