The first football could be played on a Fenland club's dreamed of 3G pitch as early as June next year.

Leverington Sports Football Club are on tenterhooks hoping that a major grant application will be successful, with news due on whether or not they have got the cash due next month.

The hope comes after the club's planning application to build the pitch on its Church Road site was granted planning permission earlier this month.

The plans have garnered a huge groundswell of support from the community with many commenting on the application, approved by Fenland planners, saying it would be a huge asset and a welcome additional facility.

The club has been busily fundraising to match fund grant applications for the £500,000 project and has raised a staggering £115,000 so far, which included two large donations.

Club vice-chairman Matthew Warren, who has been among those leading the goal of installing the floodlit 3G 9v9 has managed to raise over £13,000 by his own efforts.

Matthew, who is delighted with news the planning application has got the greenlight, completed one of the toughest ultra running races in the UK in September running 103 miles of non-stop running underground in a tunnel in Bath.

It involved him completing laps of one-mile with the same song playing loudly over and over again.

Matthew said it is hoped the club will have good news about a major grant around January 13.

He said: "We are quietly confident that our bid will be successful, but you can never guarantee anything. Literally the next couple of weeks are make or break for the project. I would be absolutely devastated, and so would everyone else at the club, if we were not successful.

"If we get the money then we would hope to start building in early spring and we hope it will be ready for use by June, but it does depend on the covid situation.

"We still have a bit of fundraising to do to hit our target of £150,000 but we have until May or June to do that."
