Plans have been submitted to build a new vegetable processing and packing unit in Chatteris.
Produce World has applied to Fenland District Council to construct a 21,000sqm unit with office space in land off Fenton Way in Chatteris.
The firm, which already has a base in Fenton Way, says it is looking to “future proof” its business.
Produce World grows vegetables on more than 20,000 acres around the area.
This produce is then washed, packed and graded at sites in Chatteris, Sutton Bridge, Yaxley, Isleham and Butterwick.
The planning statement within the outline application says: “Produce World has identified a need to upgrade their existing operations and secure their future in a highly-competitive market.
“Part of this upgrade comprises new premises with modernised factories which will allow it to retain a competitive edge and provide a significant level of employment for local people.”
The application site covers 8.3 hectares.
The planning application also includes plans for entrances into the proposed unit off Fenton Way.
The company is unable to provide details of how many jobs would be created at the new facility.
A spokesman said: “Produce World has had an opportunity to acquire a piece of land adjacent to its site on Fenton Way in Chatteris.
“Opportunities like this do not come around very often so it is being considered in order to future proof the site for growth.
“There are no further plans at the moment.”
