All Fenland’s market towns now have their own civic society following the official formation of Chatteris Past, Present & Future.
The society’s aims, set out in its newly adopted constitution, are:
n to promote the conservation, protection and improvement of the environment, in particular the public realm and the historic environment in the Chatteris area;
n to encourage high standards in the management and development of the area’s built and natural environment;
n to foster pride by stimulating and increasing knowledge and by promoting understanding of the area’s beauty, history, geography and character;
n to develop, with other organisations, the capacity and skills of individuals and communities to understand and take action to conserve, protect and improve the area’s quality, beauty and character;
n to encourage, with other organisations, appropriate investment in domestic, commercial, transport and leisure development in the area, including cycle ways and open space;
n to promote such other charitable purposes as may from time to time be determined by the Trustees.
Bill Haggata, the new chairman, said: “While we recognise all the great work that has been done by others, it’s really good news that Chatteris now has a group dedicated to protecting and raising awareness of all that is best in the area - while strongly supporting good development and better leisure facilities.
“Our next meeting is at Chatteris Town Council’s offices tomorrow (Thursday, April 3) at 7.30pm. We look forward to welcoming all those who are passionate about the past, present and future of Chatteris.”
