Fenland MP Steve Barclay has welcomed a decision to refuse permission for a travellers’ site in Wimblington in the wake of concerns raised by residents about the suitability of the land earmarked for development.

The MP wrote to Fenland District Council’s planning committee outlining reservations about the impact of the proposed development of eight travellers’ pitches at The Spinney, Horsemoor Road site.

The proposals could have resulted in four mobile homes and four touring caravan pitches on the site. Among the main objections raised by residents who attended a parish council meeting last month was the lack of basic street lighting and sewage management systems as well as a lack of access roads.

Mr Barclay said: “It was clear from the representations made by a large group of local residents that there was genuine concern at both at the suitability of the land for residential use as a travellers’ site as well as the knock on effect on the local village community.”

The application was refused on November 14 and the applicant has six months to appeal against the decision.
