QAA review welcomed by college principal
College of West Anglia principal David Pomfret has welcomed the news that it meets the quality and standards of provision for higher education following a March review.
A team from the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) visited the college and judged that its academic standards, the quality and enhancement of its student learning opportunities, and information about its learning opportunities all meet UK expectations.
It now means that the college can display the QAA review graphic, indicating to UK and international students that it meets national requirements for standards and quality.
David Pomfret, principal and chief executive of the college, said: “We welcome this positive endorsement of our higher education programmes.
“The expectations of the UK quality code for higher education are a rigorous and demanding measure of academic standards, which underpins the quality of the student learning experience.
“Our success in meeting these expectations in full is a testament to both the commitment of our staff to delivering effective teaching and the active engagement of our students in productive learning.
“We are particularly pleased by QAA’s recognition of good practice in our strategic engagement with employers.
“This enhances the employability of our graduates, and by its recognition that our staff are highly-effective in engaging with students to enhance their learning experience and meet their individual needs.
“This independent QAA judgement of our academic quality, and the associated recognition of good practice, offers relevant and reassuring evidence of our ability to deliver on our strategic vision of ‘changing lives through learning.”
The review identified a number of features of good practice.
These included: the strategic engagement with employers, which enhances learning opportunities for students the development of a student-led higher education student representative group, which contributes to the enhancement of their educational experience.
It also highlighted the college’s systematic engagement with the appropriate professional, statutory and regulatory bodies in its land-based programmes, which contributes positively to the design of student learning opportunities and employability.
The QAA’s higher education reviews are carried out by experts from other universities and colleges.
The review only made two recommendations for improvement.
Every review team includes a student reviewer, because QAA believes that students should be partners in the quality assurance of their education.
The team which reviewed the college included Heather Miller (South Eastern Regional College), Sarah Riches (independent) and Neil Mackenzie (student reviewer from University of Leeds).
