Norfolk-based discount retailer QD Stores has closed its doors in response to the coronavirus.

The company, which has a store in Wisbech, had last week declared it intended to stay open but issued a statement last night on Facebook saying it was closing with immediate effect.

"It has come to the point where the wellbeing of our colleagues and customers is more important than anything else," the statement reads.

"As the Covid-19 infection rates multiply and the strain on the NHS increases, it is with a heavy heart that we have made the very difficult decision to temporarily close all our stores, despite our classification as an essential retailer."

The statement promised: "We will be back serving our communities as soon as we safely can! Whilst the stores are closed we will continue to provide your favourite products online and deliver them safely to your door. Please visit: QualityDiscounts.com."
