New Jack's draws the crowds to Chatteris
Build it and they will come! That could have been the motto for Tesco bosses today as the new Jack's store in Chatteris attracted thousands of people through its doors.
Queues formed with some people getting there as early as 3am to make sure they did not miss any opening day bargains.
All day the aisles were thronged and the car park packed out.
Even this evening it was very busy.
Our reporter spoke to shoppers who all declared themselves delighted with what is on offer.
George Abercrombie, from Chatteris, said: "It seems pretty good. It has a nice self-service section. It's good for Chatteris."
Freddie Banks, of Chatteris, said she was very happy with the store: "I thought it was excellent. Very impressed with our square pizza!
"It is brilliant to have another shop in the town. We have waited long enough for this site to be used."
Andrew Harding, from Sutton, said: "I like it ... I love the fact that it has a quick checkout. It was such a shame to see somewhere like this empty for so long."
This and a Jack's opened in Immingham on Humberside are the first to be opened in the country. It is intended to be a rival to the discount stores Aldi and Lidl and first reactions was that the store was matching them for low prices.
The store in Fenland Way is open to 8am to10pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 5pm on Sundays.
