Residents unhappy about garages proposal

A group of residents in Chatteris are unhappy with a proposal to sell off a block of garages for housing and claim it will make parking a nightmare.

Residents of Westbourne Close currently only have parking for around four cars, with 10 bungalows in the cul-de-sac, and say it will only get worse if they lose the garages.

They are due to have a meeting today (Tuesday) with Fenland District Council, which owns the garages, and Roddons Housing Association, which is proposing to purchase the site for housing.

Colin Nunn lives in Westbourne Close and said: “The road is not very wide and people already park near the kerb. You can’t reverse.

“There are elderly residents that live here. What if an ambulance can’t get down here?”

A Fenland District Council said: “No decision has yet been made about the possible development of the garage site at Westbourne Close. It is one of a number of FDC-owned sites we are currently considering disposing of for development.

“We are keen to consult with residents and occupiers of the site to discuss any issues or concerns they may have before any planning application is made.

“We have contacted residents who could be affected and are engaging with Roddons Housing Association to discuss the potential for development and to look at the wider area with a view to tackling any parking problems. Tuesday’s meeting is a part of those discussions.

“Any subsequent application that is made for development on the site will of course be open to consultation through the normal planning process.”
