A romantic gesture of giving a five shilling postal order helped to pave the way for 60 years of marriage for Elm couple Albert and Shirley Young, pictured above.
The couple met at a holiday camp in Reading as teenagers when 14-year-old Albie gave up his treasure hunt prize to allow Shirley, then 12, to go to the ballet. Four years later they met up again and love blossomed. The pair were married in Romford Register Office on August 20, 1955. They went on to have four children – Mandy, Gillian, Wendy and Stephen. Albie and Shirley, who used to run The Globe in Wisbech, celebrated their anniversary with a family party. Shirley said: “We have our ups-and-downs like any marriage, it’s give and take.” Picture: MFCP15PM08189
