ROYAL NORFOLK SHOW 2015: Environment secretary launches £900 million countryside programme
Environment secretary and South West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss today chose the Royal Norfolk Show to launch a £900 million countryside stewardship scheme.
A large proportion of the money, which is to be rolled out over the next six years, will go towards protecting bees and other pollinators. It will also include cash for woodland and other farmland projects.
Under the scheme, farmers and landowners will be able to apply for money to help them create perfect environments and to halt the decline in the bee population.
This year’s total funding will amount to £85 million.
Ms Truss talked about the scheme when she visited the Norfolk Beekeepers’ stand at the Norwich showground.
She said: “Bees are vital to the whole of the ecosystem and it’s important that we do what we can to protect them.”
