Around 30 students and staff including Principal Jason Wing at March Neale-Wade Community College took to their heels on Friday and braved the arctic conditions to raise money for charity.
They completed two laps of the school playing fields (around 3km) in total to help raise funds for former students Arron Storey, who is competing in two marathons next month, and his band mate Ryan Lemmon, also formerly of March, who is competing in the London marathon.
The musical pair, who are members of the band Storey, are raising cash for two Kenyan-based charities after Arron completd voluntary work in the African-state last summer and saw the need for aid first hand.
Staff member Martin Dawson organised Friday’s fun run, which offered Peterborough United goodies as prizes to the first boy and girl across the finishing line.
Around £70 was raised by the effort, which was less than Arron had been hoping for, but the unseasonably cold weather put many youngsters off participating.
“It is a bit disappointing, but I’m grateful to all the staff and pupils who did brave the cold and every penny helps, so it was a worthwhile experience. I’m extremely grateful to Martin who put in a lot of work promoting the run around the school and organising it for me,” said Arron.
He will be participating in the Paris marathon on April 7 and then together with Ryan the London marathon on April 21. In the meantime he is continuing with his training and this week plans to run in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales before crossing to the continent and running in Belgium and France in the lead up to the marathon in the French capital.
