We are often asked by our clients if we can recommend a software package for them.
Obviously, each client has individual requirements – however, generally speaking, we use two different accounting software providers, each with their own packages, as follows:
Xero is an online Cloud- based computer system, meaning that as long as you have an internet connection you can access the system from your computer or laptop wherever you happen to be. It’s password protected, of course.
Xero offers three different packages depending on the size and requirements of the business – starter, standard and premium. Each attracts a different monthly cost.
It has some fantastic features such as automated bank feeds, online invoicing, mobile access, free and automatic updates, unlimited users, smart reports and unlimited email support.
Within Xero you can calculate and submit your VAT online, process your payroll and submit real time information to HM Revenue and Customs.
It is also possible to convert up to two years of transactions from Sage or Quickbooks so that the data is up-to-date from the moment you begin using it.

There are also various different accounting packages within Sage depending on the size and requirements of your business:
Sage One Cashbook or Accounting – Cloud-based online systems with automatic bank feeds and free telephone support. Within the Sage One accounting package you can have unlimited users and also calculate and submit VAT online, as with Xero.
All of the Sage 50 Accounts packages are desktop-based with automatic bank feeds, the facility to manage VAT, sales and expenses and manage stock levels. Depending on the chosen package – either Essentials, Accounts or Accounts Professional – there are different features, such as cashflow forecasting and foreign trader.
Each individual Sage package attracts a different monthly cost for continued support. The desktop packages will also attract a fee for the cost of the software.
Both Xero and Sage One have a mobile phone app from which you can access your data and upload various items, such as employee expense claims.
