The best TV series and box sets to see you through Twixmas - as voted by us!

The tree and decorations are still up, there's Christmas food still to be eaten and chocolates dotted around the house - it must be Twixmas, the vague otherworldly time between Boxing Day and New Year's Eve.

We decided to share our suggestions for must-watch TV or box sets that are worthy of your sofa time while you do nothing more than reach for the remote, or one of those chocolates.

From TV classics to newer releases here's what to watch and how to watch as chosen by ourselves, and colleagues at our sister papers across Iliffe Media.

If you like a period drama, but want a bit of action then 1883 on Paramount is one to watch. It is one of the best things I have watched on tele this year. It tells the story of the Dutton family as they cross the Great Plains and head west to Montana in a wagon train in the year 1883 - it's the prequel to the highly successful Yellowstone. There's obviously lots of adventure and action, a bit of a love story and all beautifully screened.

The first 20 minutes seemed a bit slow, but by the end of the first episode I was hooked, so don't give up. Great story-telling, and with a twist at the finale... Well worth a watch.

I've just finished watching the first series of the thriller Designated Survivor, starring Kiefer Sutherland, on Netflix.

It's a non-stop action-packed sequence of events that has you gripped from beginning to end as a tasty plot sees Sutherland catapulted from mid-ranking politician being dumped out of the US government administration to president by an act of terrorism.

He has to deal with the immediate aftermath of an explosion that reduces the Capitol Building to rubble, find those responsible, reassure a nation, guard against future attacks and become a lawmaker and world leader in the blink of an eye, never having wanted the job, and there's a crisis at every turn. Compelling stuff.

If you're looking for something easy to watch which is a bit cheesy but visually stunning, I highly recommend trying out Emily in Paris. Available on Netflix, there's already two seasons to binge watch with a third one on the way on December 21. It's full of fashion, romance and gorgeous shots of Paris... Perfect! I will forever love Gavin & Stacey. It's a series you can return to time and time again, enveloping yourself in the comforting in-jokes, the tender moments shared between two families and their closest friends and the elaborate tales of Ruth Jones' Nessa. Arguably the golden era of Corden, there's nothing not to love about this series. Available on iPlayer to enjoy now.

If you've not yet watched This is Going to Hurt (BBC iPlayer) then it could well be a filler for the post-Christmas void. Adam Kay's self-deprecating doctor sheds light on some hideous frontline challenges for NHS staff, poking fun at himself and the foibles of patients in equal measure. Is it festive? Not really. But it is a comedy with much more substance than some of the tosh served up in the Christmas TV schedules.

There's so much choice it can be a bit bewildering with both Avenue 5 and Firefly Lane making welcome returns in recent weeks (Sky and Netflix respectively). However. faced with a Twixmas of nothing-ness I'd have to suggest settling down for This Is Us, a multi-generational family story that we see from key characters at different ages and in different eras which came to a close earlier this year after six seasons. You'll be hooked by the end of episode one and can relax with a big box of chocolates knowing there's a whopping 106 episodes.

Christmas is a time for classic telly, right? That's why the channels repeat so many films at this time of year. What we want now is the televisual equivalent of a plush pair of slippers to slip on and relax with. With that in mind - and at risk of sounding like an old duffer - my recommendation is to whack on an old Inspector Morse. You'll find them on ITVX and they're brilliant. Doom-laden music, a joyously cantankerous John Thaw taking no prisoners, beautiful backdrops and mysteries that reward you as they unfold. What more could you want? There's lots of good ones but I'd particularly recommend Second Time Around or The Wolvercote Tongue.

I was a bit late to the game when it came to Brooklyn-99, but it soon became one of my favourite sit-coms, not quite beating Friends. It tells the story of the 99 policing squad and has funny story lines along the way.

With seven seasons, there's plenty to keep you busy in that awkward spell of not knowing what to do with yourself between Christmas and new year. I like TV shows where there are a variety of characters with different personalities, are you an Amy or a Jake, or a Terry? You can find it on Netflix.

Gavin and Stacey is on BBC IPlayer is perfect binge watching for Twixmas from episode 1 and stars Mathew Horne, Joanna Page, Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb. What's more it's written by James Corden and Ruth Jones. As a comedy that can be awkwardly funny at times it focuses on two families brought together by the romance between Gavin and Stacey.

With the writers always finding the commonality in their writing it has become a classic watch for those days at Christmas that merge into one.

By the time you've finished watching all the episodes you will have lost three days and can welcome in the new year happy.
