Wisbech mayor Aigars Balsevics, who has been told he can no longer run the Angel Inn pub following a licensing hearing over breaches of covid rules is set to appeal the decision.

In a statement issued following the findings of Fenland District Council's licensing committee announced on Thursday Mr Balsevics said he was disappointed by the findings.

He said: "We are naturally disappointed by this decision and we intend to appeal it to the magistrates court where we hope and believe the decision will be overturned.

"When an appeal has been lodged the premises can continue to operate until the appeal has been decided.

"We do not believe the decision is proportionate based on the facts as presented in the hearing. We believe the premises took reasonable steps to ensure the licensing objectives were promoted and that the safety and wellbeing of our customers has and will always continue to be important to us.

"In hindsight we recognise that we could have done more to enhance the safety of our customers but the decision is not proportionate as there is no track record of any matters arising in our premises before Christmas Eve.

"We thank the many customers who wrote to the licensing authority to show their support for us and we look forward to opening once lockdown has come to an end and welcoming our customers back."

Mr Balsevics and his landlords Elgood's Brewery has up to 21 days to appeal the decision made following a full day's hearing into alleged breaches that included lack of social distancing, failure to wear face coverings, lack of hygiene measures and the serving of alcohol at the Alexandra Road pub's bar.

The pub will be allowed to operate under Mr Balsevics supervision, subject to lockdown guidelines, while the appeal process is carried out.

He faces losing the licence as designated premises supervisor for the pub and Elgood's have been told the pub's premises licence has been suspended for three months while they find a replacement for Mr Balsevics.
