Changes to the one-way system in Wisbech town centre have created an “accident waiting to happen” according to a trader.
Wisbech postmaster Ray Wicks says more should have been done to warn drivers about the changes to the town’s Market Place.
On Friday, the traffic flow was reversed with drivers only able to enter via Church Terrace and Hill Street under a Cambridgeshire County Council and Wisbech Town Council scheme.
Drivers have been ignoring the signs which have been put up in the town centre and have been meeting each other head-on in the narrow streets.
Mr Wicks said: “The principle is OK but no-one is adhering to it. It has just ended up in traffic chaos.
“The authorities have to be out there. The whole thing is a bit of a mess at the moment.
“There is a dangerous accident waiting to happen.”
Some warning signs went missing over the weekend.
Town council leader David Oliver says the scheme will make a difference and there are more disabled bays.
He said: “Once everything has worked out and got past these problems, it should be a lot safer for everyone.
“We are trying to increase footfall in the town centre and we are trying to make everything flow correctly.”
A county spokesman said: “We have been working for some time with the local council and businesses to make people aware of the changes which have been made to the one-way system.
“We understand some people might be uncertain, however there is new signage in place to guide drivers around. We believe that the changes should make a real difference to the traffic in Wisbech.”
