A man has suffered serious injuries after a car was hit by a train near Stretham this afternoon, Friday August 12.

A man in his 40s being treated for a severe head injury, the East of England Ambulance Service said.

A spokesman said an emergency call was received at 2.34pm on Friday with the East Anglian Air ambulance, a land ambulance, three ambulance officers, the hazardous area response team and police sent to the scene near Stretham in Cambridgeshire.

One patient, a man in his 40s, has been taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for treatment.

The train has been damaged and so around 115 passengers are currently being transferred to another train.

The A1123 is closed, Dimmock’s Cote Road, both ways between A10 Cambridge Road and Upware Road.

A British Transport Police spokesman confirmed officers were on the railway line between Cambridge and Ely after reports a train had struck a vehicle on a level crossing.

Trains between Lynn and Cambridge may be cancelled, amended or delayed by up to 60 minutes.

Disruption is expected to continue until 7pm.

Services affected include Abellio Greater Anglia, CrossCountry and Great Northern trains.
