Turning back the school clock

FORMER pupils of Upwell Secondary Modern School enjoyed catching up on old times at a first-time reunion held on Friday at Outwell Village Hall.

The original idea was to get pupils who attended the school from 1953 to 1957 together.

However, the reunion proved so popular that it was opened up to other years.

One of the organisers, Peter Murfitt, of Wisbech, said it went so well he is sure it will the first of many other reunions.

“It was a brilliant night. I am sure it will not be the last. I had some calls on Saturday morning saying how much people had enjoyed it,” said Mr Murfitt (69), explaining some of the old school chums hadn’t seen each other for 54 years.

Former pupils attended from near and far including one who made a special journey from America to attend, another from Spain while others were from different parts of the UK as well as some still living locally.

The organisers were able to track many people down after they responded to an article in the Citizen and also through something similar in the Outwell parish magazine.

In all, about 80 people attended. Old school pictures were on display and there was a buffet.
