A 71-year-old man, believed to be West Norfolk farmer Tony Martin, has been released on bail tonight following his arrest in Wisbech earlier today on suspicion of possessing an illegal firearm.
Police have spent much of the day searching a property in Emneth Hungate as part of what they say was a “planned operation.”
In a statement issued shortly after 9pm tonight, a Norfolk Police spokesman said: “A 71-year-old man arrested in connection with a planned police operation at a property in Emneth Hungate, Norfolk, has been released on bail pending further enquiries.
“Officers have this evening finished their search of the address and the man, who was arrested on suspicion of possession of an illegal firearm, has been released on police bail until late February 2016.”
Mr Martin made national headlines when he was convicted of shooting dead a teenage burglar at his farm in the Fens in 1999.
He was initially found guilty of murder, though that was reduced to manslaughter on appeal. He served three years in prison.
