A volunteer group is rallying more support as it explores the possibility of taking over the running of a community playground.

An appeal for more volunteers to join the Friends of Wisbech Adventure Playground has been launched to help shape the future direction and management of the popular site in Waterlees Road.

The playground, known as The Spinney, opened in 2011 at a cost of £1 million and is currently run by Cambridgeshire County Council.

But managers are looking to expand and develop the roles played by the Friends, so the group can take on more responsibility for areas such as fundraising, community engagement and management of events at the playground.

The council would work alongside the Friends, with a view to possibly letting the group take over the running of the playground at some point in the future.

A council spokesman said they were looking for volunteers to fill a number of roles including a chairman, book keeper and playworkers, as well as people to help with maintenance, event management and support, and marketing.

He said no specific model of governance had yet been decided – and some roles may not be needed until this has been agreed.
