Walpole Cross Keys housing scheme approved

Initial plans for five new homes have been approved.

West Norfolk Council’s planning committee visited the proposed development site off Little Holme Road, Walpole Cross Keys on Thursday before backing the plan, subject to the completion of legal agreements.

The decision came despite the opposition of parish councillors, who claimed the site was not the most suitable in the village for development.

They also pointed out that a similar proposal was rejected earlier this year and raised concerns about increased traffic levels in the area, which is served by narrow roads.

Officers acknowledged the concerns about the roads and lack of pavement provision.

But they added: “This is similar to other areas of the village and there is no technical reason why the site cannot be made safe.”

They also reminded members of a legal ruling in the summer, which said the council did not have a five year supply of housing land.

Under planning guidelines, the council should support schemes which are deemed to be “sustainable development” unless there are clear reasons not to.
