Warning over unlicensed prom drivers offering services in Fenland

A spike in unlicenced drivers offering chauffeur services for school proms has prompted Fenland District Council (FDC) to warn parents to check their credentials.

Officials say that legitimate companies will be happy to supply proof of valid licences, without which drivers and vehicles will be breaking the law and uninsured for any journeys.

Hire vehicles capable of carrying nine or more passengers, including limousines, must have a public service vehicle licence – the type of permit required by local buses.

Those with eight or fewer passenger seats need a private hire vehicle licence, which the council issues, while the driver must have a dedicated private hire licence from the same authority.

A spokesperson for FDC said: “Not only will the company be breaking the law, but appropriate background checks may also not have been done.

“If a company has neither licence in place, it can be reported to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, which has the power to remove vehicles from the road.

“Licensing requirements apply only to hired vehicles,” they added.

“If a friend is taking your child to prom in their vehicle, and there is no payment being made - not even for fuel - the same rules don't apply.”

As well as contacting private hire firms individually, concerned parents can also check legitimacy with Fenland District Council by emailing licensing@fenland.gov.uk or calling 01354 654321.
