League Cup Finals
The Challenge Cup featured I.B.A. Trojans against last season’s winners Walton Highway ‘B’.
For Trojans, in ranking order, it was Chad Bassett, Steve Barrett and Mike Crowson and for Highway Allan Nicholls, Steve Goodale and Steve Ely. The two doubles played first were shared, Bassett and Crowson beating Nicholls and Ely in three. The next went the distance Goodale and Ely winning against Barrett and Crowson 11-8 in the fifth.
Bassett against Nicholls was the game of the match, Bassett taking it in the fourth 11-9, 14-12, 9-11, 11-8. It was then a comfortable win for Crowson against Goodale in three. Ely then pulled one back against Barrett in three. Bassett then won a great, close four end game against Goodale 12-10, 11-9, 12-14, 11-8. Barrett against Nicholls was also fiercely fought. At 1-2, Nicholls then won the next two comfortably. The last game went the distance with Crowson winning 11-9 against Ely and the match for Trojans 5-3.
The Sleight Doubles Handicap saw Walton Highway ‘A’ fielding Brett Heppenstall, Alan Ashberry and Peter Munch against Welney’s Ryan Ringer Duffy, Steve Mason and Steve Kent.
The match was hard fought with long rallies but it was surprisingly over by 5-1 after 26 ends. Of the 26 ends nine went to deuce and there were three five-end games. Welney’s only win was Mason and Kent against Ashberry and Munch 8-11, 13-11, 11-4, 13-11.
In the Parker Shield Handicap Walton Highway ‘B’ with Steve Goodale, Allan Nicholls and Graham Sheppard faced Welney fielding the same side. With a handicap of 99 over nine games Highway had it all to do.
They were up against it from the off as Steve Mason, who was this year’s Vets 40’s singles champion, won all three of his games. He lost just 26 points against Goodale, 39 points against Nicholls and 32 points against Sheppard.
Ringer Duffy, runner-up in the open singles this year, beat Sheppard 42-26, and obtained 22 points against Nicholls. Steve Kent also played well adding 85 points, 36 against Sheppard, 35 against Goodale and 14 against Nicholls. Welney won 464-381 after eight games played.
